Meryl Streep Criticised for Failing to Mention Margaret Thatcher In Academy Award Acceptance Speech
Meryl Streep has been criticised for forgetting to mention Margaret
Thatcher in her acceptance speech after winning an Oscar for her performance in
The Iron Lady.
The Academy Award winner thanked her husband, Don and her
make-up artist Roy Helland amongst others, but failed to mention the iconic
Prime Minister whom she portrayed in the film.
The decision not to acknowledge Baroness Thatcher has
angered many. Lord Norman Tebbit, a close ally of Maggie when she was in power,
told The Sun: “I’m not at all
surprised she didn’t mention her. The film was about Meryl Streep, not Lady
Thatcher. If Margaret Thatcher had been like the woman portrayed by Meryl
Streep, she wouldn’t have lasted six months as Prime Minister.”
Baroness Thatcher’s former press spokesperson Sir Bernard
Ingham was also far from impressed, attacking the focus of the film on her deteriorating
mental health. He fumed: “I don’t propose to see somebody making money out of
somebody’s age. I think it demonstrates poor taste.”
Meryl Streep probably won’t be dwelling on the criticism for
too long – the actress is no doubt still celebrating her third win at the
prestigious award ceremony.
